Because people don’t think they have to be better than cats. Many people, however, think they have to be better than other people. They have to be richer, or more important, or prettier/more handsome. Their car has to be newer and faster - their clothes more expensive and period-stylish - their house bigger and in a better neighborhood. They have to win - to be first. Many people judge their level of life-success based on those around them. I’m sure I have far less than most of these people, but I still feel sorry for them.
